Tasting - Emeri de Bortoli Sparkling Shiraz

Name: Emeri de Bortoli Sparkling Shiraz
Varietal: Shiraz
Region: South East
Country: Australia
Year: N/A
Price: $9.95

Shop Review: A relatively light, fresh style of sparking Shiraz, with berries and hints of chocolate picking up just a touch of sweet vanilla on the finish.

Personal Review: I was looking forward to trying this wine because I have never tried and never actually knew of a particular sparkling red wine. I did not seem to pick up a particular nose simply because all I could smell was alcohol. I felt that I was not going to enjoy the wine because of the initial smell of the nose. After a few more sniffs it seemed to have a berry nose. This wine had a very sweet palate filled with different berries but most prominently were the strawberries. I was not sure if I would enjoy the bubbly affect but it was rather pleasant and added a certain factor to the tasting that other red wines do not have.

Tasting - Tres Ojos Garnacha

Name: Tres Ojos Garnacha
Varietal: 50% Garnacha, 50% Tempranillo
Region: Calatayud
Country: Spain
Year: 2011
Price: $6.95

Shop Review: This wine has a brick red color with a bouquet of red raspberries, spice and white pepper. The palate is incredibly concentrated and rich. The modern styles of Garnacha in Spain are continuously being perceived worldwide as wines of extraordinarily good quality. This wine is fruity, juicy and shows a great depth, ripe tannins, length but yet with wonderful elegance and lightness. Enjoy with sausages, roasted meats, aged cheeses etc.

Personal Review: The Tres Ojos Garnacha had an extremely strong nose that I did not enjoy at all. The first thing that I thought of when I smelled the wine was a rotten clementine. It smelled of rotten citrus and was simply not enjoyable. However, once I got past that scent I realized it had a spice, tobacco quality to it. Again, as soon as I smelled that I knew that I was not going to enjoy it. This wine was so full-bodied and tannin filled that it was a lot to take in at once. I did not enjoy the strong spice finish and will most likely never drink this again. However, other people at the tasting loved this wine so it simply will differ from palate to palate.

Tasting - Montebuena

Name: Montebuena
Varietal: Tempranillo
Region: Rioja
Country: Spain
Year: 2010
Price: $8.95

Shop Review: Ripe cherry and blackcurrant on the nose and in the mouth. Pliant and seamless in texture, with good heft and back-end energy. Finishes smooth and sweet, with fine-grained tannins providing shape and grip. Still on the young side but this wine drinks very well with an hour or so of decanting; it's an excellent value for Rioja.

My Review: The Montebuena had a beautiful rich color to it. Once I heard it was a Tempranillo I expected the color to be bold and red due to the fact that Tempranillo wines are normally fermented for a long time with the grape skins. Along with the wonderful color it had a wonderful nose. It smelled of blackberries and seemed to have a jammy quality to it. It had almost the same reaction on the palate. It was smooth going down and had a long finish tasting of blackberries and raspberries. I feel that this wine is a red that would be wonderful in the summer and is not too bold but is just perfect.

Tasting - Sainte Victoire Cotes de Provence Rose

Name: Sainte Victoire Cotes de Provence
Varietal: Grenache, Syrah, Cinsault
Region: Provence
Country: France
Year: 2011
Price: $8.95

Shop Review: Bright salmon pink; typical of the fresh but warm Provence style. Refined and complex on the nose, with summer fruit and floral notes. Dry and crisp, with a delicate flavor and full texture.
My Review:  One of the things I found most interesting about this wine was the color of it. It had a light pink color. Not light or white enough to be seen as a true white but not pink enough to be sure it is a rose. I thought this wine had a warm nose, kind of like a toasted marshmallow. It also seemed to have a floral nose like most other whites and rose wines. This wine left something to be desired on the palate. Although it was soft in tannins it seemed to lack a certain jazz to it. This wine would be nice chilled and would be perfect for a picnic in the middle of a hike.

Tasting - Canyon Road Chardonnay

Name: Canyon Road Chardonnay
Varietal: Chardonnay
Region: California
Country: United States
Year: 2011
Price: $6.95

Winery Review: Medium-bodied wine with notes of crisp apple and ripe citrus fruit with a hint of cinnamon spice. Delicious complement to grilled chicken, lighter pasta dishes or mild cheeses.

My Review: I thought this wine was delicious. It had a soft nose with citrus accents. It again was soft on the palate and had a subtle citrus taste to it. I thought this wine was very smooth and had the perfect amount of oak on the palate. Due to the smooth quality and the perfect balance of oak I would like to have this wine again. I think it would be perfect on a warm summer day or even a crisp fall evening.

Winery Visit - Casanel Vineyards

Before I turned 21 my mother hardly would drink wine. She didn't seem to enjoy it and to be honest had no one to drink it with so she didn't want to buy bottles and then waste most of the wine. However, after I turned 21 last Summer the first thing on our agenda was to go to a winery. Since then my mom and I have tried to go to a different one every so often. She has even experienced more than I have now that I am at school but when I went home for Spring Break we spent a gorgeous Saturday afternoon experiencing two different wineries. The first one we went to happened to be Casanel Vineyards. Along with my mother my friend Erin and her friend Nancy were along for the ride.

When we first arrived to the vineyard we actually wanted to turn around. There was construction going on and we did not think that the view was all that pretty. However, we stayed and had a wonderful experience.

Sign when first entering the vineyard

Taken from their brochure, "Casanel Vineyards is located at the foot of the Catoctin Mountain; we offer a peaceful setting surounded by hardwood forests and ten acres of grape vines. The two acre pond with a gazebo offers an appealing setting for picnics or quiet reflection. The owners Casey and Nelson DeSouza take great pride in the newly renovated 1800 stone bank barn that is now the Casanel Tasting Room. Their hard work and vision promise not only great tasting wines, but a friendly warm welcome from family and staff!"

As the brochure mentions the Tasting Room is a beautiful renovated stone barn. Not only is the outside gorgeous and stunning to look at, the inside is just as lovely. The couple took the time to make the proper renovations and you can truly tell that love and detail went into it. Although they made modern changes to the barn, the feeling of being in a barn still exists which is what I loved the most. Whenever we experience new wineries, my mom and I always enjoy doing a tasting to experience the different wines and choose which one we like best.

Tasting Bar
When we entered the facility we were kindly greeted and asked if we could each have one of the papers with the list of wines to write on since we needed to take tasting notes. We explained that we were Virginia Tech students and were taking a class about wine. As soon as we said we were from Tech her face lit up and she mentioned that her daughter was a recent graduate of Virginia Tech. If you look closely at the photo above you can see a Hokie bird in the right corner of the shelf. With that we met her daughter who mentioned that she had also taken this class. Our wine tasting began with two white wines. The first was as follows...

Name: Viognier Mas Que Nada
Varietal: Viognier
Region: Leesburg, VA
Country: U.S.
Year: 2009
Price: $28

Winery (Casanel Vineyards) Review: Won best varietal in VWL's 2013 Best of Reader's Choice Awards! Our 2009 Viognier exudes a delicate floral nose, bursting with flavors of white peach and nectarine mid- palate. The finish lingers with a tart crispness of limes, reminiscent of key lime pie which complements the smooth, silky finish. Barrel-aged for 8 months, our Viognier is the perfect porch sipper or lighter style of wine to pair with sweet and savory dishes.

My Review: Absolutely loved this wine. I actually bought a glass to enjoy outside after the tasting and thoroughly enjoyed it. Although the description says that it has white peach and nectarine flavors, I felt that it had an apple aroma. When I smelled it I immediately thought of biting into a fresh, crisp, green apple. It was smooth on the palate and left a semi-sweetness behind. I would definitely drink this wine on a warm spring day with a basket of crackers and bread.

The second...

Name: Chardonnay Mas Que Nada
Varietal: Chardonnay
Region: Leesburg, VA
Country: U.S.
Year: 2009
Price: $17

Winery Review: Our 2009 Chardonnay is full of flavor and body. Our Chardonnay begins with a
nose of subtle herbal aromas, and is then followed by hints of melon and star fruit. The flavors suggest a touch of grilled melon wrapped in Prosciutto, with apple and cucumber essence.
Barrel-aged for 8 months, it finishes with notes of oak and butterscotch.

My Review: This wine opened into a lovely lemon and pineapple aroma. It smelled crisp, and almost a little tart. It had a dryness to it that was detected after the first swallow, which I did not enjoy. Although it seemed to have soft tannins and a smooth finish it left behind a taste on the palate that I could not depict. It seemed to closely relate to a creamy taste. This was my mom's favorite.

We then began to try some rose and red wines.

Name: Norton Rose
Varietal: Norton blend
Region: Leesburg, VA
Country: U.S.
Year: 2011
Price: $24

Winery Review: Whole-cluster pressed and barrel-aged for 8 months in French oak, we fermented this Virginian red wine grape as a white wine and completely transformed this varietal. A lighter, friendlier version, our Norton tastes just like sangria, but without the work!  With natural notes of fresh berries permeating throughout; flavors of strawberry, raspberry, and cherry sit lightly upon your palette and then develop into a delightfully spicy, lingering finish.  Perfect for your summer barbeques or patio get togethers!  We pair this vintage with any and all dishes because of its light yet bright berry taste.

My Review: Great aroma! Any berry that one could think of you could smell in the aroma of this wine. I depicted a strong strawberry and vanilla scent but I believe that someone else could say that it smelled strongly of a different berry. When the owner told us that this wine was like a sangria I did not think that I would like it since I am not the biggest fan of sangria, but I thought it was delicious. It had the same taste as a sangria, very fruitful, with a light spice, but it did not have the extra sweetness that sangria usually has. Wonderful summer wine.

 Name: Cabernet Sauvignon Batucada
Varietal: 90% Cabernet Sauvignon, 10% Petit Verdot
Region: Leesburg, VA
Country: U.S.
Year: 2008
Price: $23

Winery Review: Our 2008 Cabernet Sauvignon exhibits fresh herbal notes of pine and eucalyptus on the nose. It has hints of darker red fruits mid-palate, such as black cherry and raspberry. The finish is smooth, with traces of cinnamon and oak. The perfect red for your richer dishes!

My Review: I felt that this wine had a strong black cherry aroma. Even before reading the tasting notes I was able to depict it from my initial smell. I also immediately knew from the smell that the wine was going to have a spice do it due to the cinnamon aroma. This wine was definitely dry and spicy on the palate. It had a long finish that ended with a tinge of vanilla on the palate.

**The image on this bottle is special due to the fact that the Governor asked Casanel Vineyards to create a commemorative Civil War label. The image was drawn by their niece, another Hokie grad, and won for Best Bottle Artwork in VWL's 2013 Best of Readers' Choice Awards!

Name: Merlot Batucada
Varietal: 90% Merlot, 10% Petit Verdot
Region: Leesburg, VA
Country: U.S.
Year: 2008
Price: $21

Winery Review: Our '08 Merlot starts with deep red fruit flavors in the nose, namely black currant, strawberry, and black cherry. Barrel aged for over 10 months in French oak, our Merlot also has hints of earth and cedar, culminating in a smooth, satisfying finish.

My Review: This wine was entirely too "strong" for my palate. It had a black cherry, and spice aroma which was pleasing on the nose. However, it was full of tannins. It had a strong spice on the palate and was what I would call I very full wine. Throughout these tastings I am finding that I do not care for wines that are filled with tannins. It makes me wonder if my palate will ever change and eventually I will like them, but as for now I did not enjoy this wine. However, if I were to drink it I think it would pair well with a flavorful meal such as Chinese or Thai food.

After the tasting we decided to each purchase a glass of wine and sit on their patio area to enjoy with some cheese, crackers and grapes. My decision as to which wine to get was pretty simply because I absolutely loved the Viognier. It was smooth, and fruity and just plain delicious. Although it doesn't look bright and sunny in the picture below, the sun came out in full force 30 minutes after this picture was taken. Although it was sunny, it was still a little chilly but regardless it was wonderful day and experience.

Outdoor seating
After a while of sitting and talking my friend and I decided to go look at the vineyards and explore a little. Although there wasn't a ton to look at we were able to see some of the vineyards that they have on location. We also learned through our travel that the wine is not barreled and created on site. Although the vines are there, they take the grapes to a neighboring winery and have their friend Karem work his magic.

View of the vines that cover 10 acres of the vineyard
We also had a chance to walk through the building that is currently under construction, due to the bathrooms being located in it. After talking with the owner (explained below) we learned that this building will soon house barrels in which this vineyard will go from being a vineyard to a winery that barrels and bottles their own wine on site.

Building that is 3/4 of the way complete

On our way back out to meet my mom and her friend I noticed a cute spiral staircase. For some reason I have always been obsessed with them and want one in my house. As my friend and I were discussing what may be at the end of the staircase, the owner Casey was walking up, and mentioned that we could go down and look if we wanted to. When we reached the end of the staircase we noticed that it led to a second tasting bar and were warmly greeted by a lively Brazilian.

Staircase that leads to second tasting bar

The Brazilian happened to be Nelson DeSouza, Casey's husband. I'd have to say that although we did not come here expecting to learn anything not wine related I learned a lot from our 30-45 minute conversation with him. He opened by asking if we were the girls from Tech and mentioned that he once took a world regions class with professor Boyer, and found it to be very rewarding. I believe he grabbed my full attention when he said that, "Women have always been the superior sex; men are idiots. It was derived from Adam and Eve and is as simple as that." However, I feel the most powerful comment he made was, "The wine business is a non-profit organization." He mentioned that he put more money into this place than he ever expects to see in the future. He also mentioned that just this year, six years after opening, he saw his first profit of a penny come into his pocket. Although he renovated and is passionate about his location and buildings it was easy to see that he is not quite a wine enthusiast. As a retired construction worker he more or less enjoys watching the buildings go up and drinking the wine. His other valuable comment that he said with a huge smile and laugh, "Wine making is hard as shit."

All in all we had a fabulous day. Although it would have been nice to go when there was not any construction going on and the large pond was actually blue instead of brown, it was a wonderful experience. There was great wine, friends, sunshine and some lessons involved, what more could one ask for.  I will definitely be returning this summer to not only see the renovations complete and explore some more but for the great company and wine!

Tasting - Potluck Sweet Malbec

Name: Potuck Sweet Malbec
Varietal: Malbec
Region: Mendoza
Country: Argentina
Year: 2010
Price: $7.95

Shop Review: Deep red brilliant with violet hints. Complex, fruity, and predominant red fruits. Easy to drink, round with persistent sweetness, very well balanced with sweet tannins.

My Review: I have had other desert wines at different tastings before but have never experienced one quite like this. Although it was a desert wine it did not have the overly sweet palate as most others do. Due to the fact that they stopped the fermentation early, the sugar in this wine is natural from the grapes. It had a sweet aroma and was sweet on the palate but it did not taste like I was drinking sugar like I have experienced in the past with other desert wines. I would definitely buy this wine again to enjoy with a chocolate cake or something of that sort.

Tasting - Domaine De Grange de Payan

Name: Domaine de Grange de Payan
Varietal: Grenache (Majority)
Region: Cotes du Rhone
Country: France
Year: 2011
Price: $8.95

Shop Review: Intensely spicy and precise, with lively red berry flavors and a hint of black pepper. The Grenache, which makes up the majority of the wine, is deeper and more powerful, offering cherry and black raspberry qualities lifted by zesty minerality.

My Review: This wine was hard to depict a certain aroma. It seemed to have a light fruit aroma, with the black cherry and almond scent being the strongest aroma to depict but still not very strong. I also felt that I could smell the tannins in this wine. However, it had a light tannin taste. Although it is the same grape as the tinto figaro it lacked the spice on the palate which is why I enjoyed this wine much more. It had a smooth, ripe finish and would be good with any dinner.

Tasting - Tinto Figaro

Name: Tinto Figaro
Varietal: 100% Garnacha
Region: Calatayud
Country: Spain
Year: 2009
Price: $6.95

Shop Review: Figaro is 100% Garnacha, made from a selection of the best grapes grown in the oldest vineyards. While not truly an “oaked wine”, a short stay in oak barrels provides a nice spicy flavor boost. Bright violet. Dark berry and cherry aromas show a jammy aspect. Supple and gently sweet, with good lift to its black raspberry and boysenberry flavors. Smooth and broad on the finish, leaving behind a hint of spiciness. Extremely easy to drink and an excellent value.

My Review: This wine had a beautiful color; a deep, velvety red. It had a cherry aroma with a hint of tobacco. I thought that through doing these tastings I would begin to enjoy different kinds of wine but it seems that my palate hasn't changed. I knew as soon as I smelled it that I was not going to enjoy it. It has a dry, jammy palate and finished with a spicy taste. I do not enjoy when wines taste like spice so I most likely would not purchase this wine.

Tasting - Maipe Malbec Rose

Name: Maipe Malbec Rosé
Varietal: 100% Malbec
Region: Mendoza
Country: Argentina
Year: 2011
Price: $7.95

Shop Review: Intense pink color with violet hints. Fresh red fruit bouquet, strawberry and cherry flavors, balanced acidity, dry and lingering finish. Excellent with tuna or green salad, pasta, spicy Asian dishes.

My Review: The employee at vintage cellars mentioned that they also have this wine in a malbec. However, this wine is a malbec rose because it had less contact with the skins. This wine had a numerous amount of fruit scents on the nose with a touch of vanilla. Although it had numerous fruit scents in the aroma, it seemed to have a pear taste on the palate. It did not seem to have much acidity and was low in tannins. I enjoyed this wine for the first two sips but after the final sip I noticed that it was relatively dry. Although I am not a fan of dry wines I could see myself purchasing this in the future. It would be good with a heavy meal on a hot day due to the fact that it can be chilled.

Tasting - Cortenova Pinot Grigio

Name: Cortenova Pinot Grigio
Varietal: 100% Pinot Grigio
Region: Veneto
Country: Italy
Year: 2012
Price: $7.95

Shop Review: Brilliant straw color with emerald reflections. Fresh and floral bouquet with a hint of pears, apricots and bananas. Fresh and inviting with bright fruit and an easy drinking style with a pleasing hint of almonds in the aftertaste. Pairs well with seafood dishes, risottos with scampi, spaghetti with clams, sole in white wine Perfect also as an aperitif.

My Review: With 12% alcohol this wine was very light, crisp, clean and refreshing. It had a strong pear and banana scent on the nose and I feel that it also had a strong tannin smell. Although I could smell the tannins I could not taste them. This wine was low in tannins, and did not have a strong, dedescriptive taste. I enjoyed the wine but I could not say that it tasted like a certain fruit. It did however have a long finish and I could definitely see myself enjoying this wine on a hot summer day.

Tasting - 2011 Chardonnay

Name: 2011 Chardonnay
Varietal: 100% Chardonnay
Region: Hamilton, VA
Country: U.S.
Year: 2011
Price: $24

Winery Review: This classic barrel fermented style has nicely integrated flavors that blend with the apple and pear nuances to produce a full bodied wine. A great match with grilled poultry and heavier seafood dishes.

My Review: I found it interesting that this wine was fermented in three different barrels. It was first fermented in two different oak barrels and the completed in a steel barrel.  I thought that because of this the wine would have a strong oak taste but I didn't seem to notice it. It had a refreshing, crisp apple aroma with a hint of butter. It was crisp and light on the palate without a strong dry taste. It finished with soft tannins and I truly enjoyed it.

Tasting - 2011 Cabernet Franc

Name: 2011 Cabernet Franc
Varietal: 100% Cabernet Franc
Region: Hamilton, VA
Country: U.S.
Year: 2011
Price: $24

Winery Review: Bright red fruit aromas of strawberry, cherry and cranberry that are complimented by soft oak notes. Gently extracted in order to make this a fresh, young drinking style of Cabernet Franc, the wine exhibits supple tannins, fresh red fruits and good balance. A great summer red wine that will pair well with a wide variety of dishes, from grilled tuna or pork chops to pasta.

My Review: This wine had a very strong vanilla and cherry aroma. It was delicious and made me excited to try the wine. It was light and had soft tannins which made it pleasant to drink. It was very balanced and left a long, light finish on the palate. A red wine that I would definitely enjoy again.

Tasting - 2011 Merlot

Name: 2011 Merlot
Varietal: 100% Merlot
Region: Hamilton, VA
Country: U.S.
Year: 2011
Price: $24

Winery Review: A medium bodied red with fresh red fruits and a touch of oak. Balanced with a combination of raspberry, cherry and red current notes. Ten months in French and American oak have added volume and richness. Made in a more approachable style, this wine is a good match for meats and pasta.

My Review: This wine has a sweet aroma. Although it smelled sweet and knew that it had berries in it I couldn't depict a certain scent that was strong. The wine seemed relatively average and did not necessarily leave me wanting more. It had soft oak flavors on the palate and gave a long finish.

Tasting - 2011 Petit Verdot

Name: 2011 Petit Verdot
Varietal: 100% Petit Verdot
Region: Hamilton, VA
Country: U.S.
Year: 2011
Price: $26

Winery Review: This wine shows dark fruit notes of blackberries with some overlapping floral and spice notes, as well as vanilla and toast. Nicely extracted and deep in color and body, the wine has depth and structure. The dark fruits work with the new oak and tannins to provide for a complete wine. A young wine that will benefit from time in the bottle, it will be a great match for heavier meats and game.

My Review: I did not enjoy this wine due to the full-bodied tannins that it had. It had a spicy, cinnamon, tobacco aroma which gave me the impression that I was not going to enjoy the wine. There was no surprise when this wine gave a spicy, tobacco finish. I agree with the winery when they say that it should be paired with heavier meats. I feel the meat will help cut the spice of the wine and make it more enjoyable.

My Review: Loved this wine! Actually bought a bottle because you never know how each bottle will differ from batch to batch. It had a strong, sweet aroma with a very strong honey dew scent. It opened with a sweetness but had a balanced finish that was full and clean.

Tasting - Monte Aman

Name: Monte Aman
Variety: 100% Tempranillo
Region: Arlanza
Country: Spain
Year: 2009
Price: $5.95

Winery Review: "Fermentation of selected grapes in stainless steel tanks at controlled temperature. Aging in American oak casks for 5 months followed by 3 months in the bottle before being released in the market. Inky ruby. Ripe cherry and plum on the nose. Smooth and fleshy, with deep dark fruit flavors complicated by bitter chocolate and anise. A spicy quality adds lift and focus to the weighty fruit. Offers an appealing mix of power and energy and drinks very well right now."

My Review: This wine had a strong cherry aroma with hints of plum. With 13.5% alcohol in it I felt that I could smell the acidity but was pleasantly surprised when the wine did not taste acidity on the palate. It was dry tasting with soft tannins and a soft finish with a slight hint of chocolate. Although it was smooth I did not enjoy the after taste. I cannot pin-point what the taste was but I did not enjoy it.

Region: Mendoza
Country: Argentina
Year: 2012
Price: $7.95

Winery Review: "Made from 85% Chardonnay, 15% Viognier. 30% malolactic fermentation, 30% was aged in French oak barrels. Brilliant yellow golden color with green hints. The wine is crisp and filled with white peach, pear, green apples flavors, toasty vanilla. Elegant and luscious wine, well balanced. Crisp and long finish. Pairs well with creamy soups, pork, veal, vegetables."

My Review: When I was told that this wine had 14.5% alcohol in it, I did not think I would enjoy it because I thought it would have very strong tannins. However, I really enjoyed this. It had a delicious green apple aroma and was sweet on the palate. It had a light taste, soft tannins and a long finish. I would purchase this wine again.

Tasting - Villa d' Orvieto

Name: Villa d'Orvieto
Variety: Grechetto, Trebbiano, Malvasia
Region: Orvieto
Country: Italy
Year: 2011
Price: $6.95

Winery Review: "It’s a blend of Grechetto, Procanico (Trebbiano), and Malvasia. Fresh and crisp, it has a beautiful, floral bouquet. It is wonderful with appetizers, fish, chicken, and salads.

My Review: This wine had a pleasant, sweet aroma of pear. It also smelled as though it was aged in an oak barrel. I enjoyed this wine because it was light and airy. It definitely would be enjoyable on a summer day. It had a floral taste but to me that was the only flavor I could depict.

Name: Dibon Cava Brut Reserve
Varietal: 45% Macabeo, 25% Xarel-lo, 30% Parellada
Region: Penedes
Country: Spain
Year: NV
Price: $9.95

Winery Review: Light gold with plenty of bubbles, this wine has aromas of apples and pears with pleasant of floral notes. Crisp and light-bodied on the palate, stone fruit flavors are accompanied by a mild minerality and balanced acidity. A delicious sparkler for a great price!

My Review: I have never had a bubbly wine before but I must say that I enjoyed it. In the beginning the bubbles added some spice to the wine however, after taking a few sips of the wine I noticed that I couldn't depict much of the different tastes. The wine was dry on the palate and had a very fragrant aroma of pears and bananas.
